Steele grew up in New Jersey and attended Morristown High School. After high school he went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and after this he attended Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences where he graduated with a double degree in History and African-American studies in 1993.
After university, Lexington worked as a trainee stockbroker in Euro Brokers Inc in the World Trade Center in New York and slowly worked his way up the chain of command. He was so good and dedicated that he was a licensed financial adviser and working on Wall Street within months of graduating which is no mean feat. He has since said that he would have been in the twin towers and more than likely have been a victim of the September 11, attacks in 2001 if he had held onto his job as a stockbroker.
